Facts, Trivia, Memories and More about Ernie Nevel

Notes
Jon C. from the Jackson, TN wrote: "I remember Ernie as a 31 year old rookie. I remember he relieved Stubby Overmire and it was Stubby's only win as a Yankee. Stubby had a habit of beating the Yankees while twirling for the St. Louis Browns. So the Yankees traded for him. Nevel only pitched in 4 games in the two years when he was recalled in September. Nevel was then traded to the Cincinnati Reds in a trade that brought Ewell (The Whip) Blackwell to the Yankees."  Editor's Note: Ernie debuted at age 30 with the Yankees.  He was indeed included in the trade that brought Ewell Blackwell to the Yankees and only appeared in 4 games with the Yankees.  Stubby Overmire was traded to the Yankees in midseason of 1951 (in which the Yankees sent Tommy Byrne to the Browns) and did only win one game for the Yankees.  However, Ernie Nevel never appeared in relief of Stubby Overmire, whose only Yankee win was a complete game victory over the Philadelphia A's on August  17, 1951.  Ernie Nevel notched a save in relief of Tom Morgan on September 29, 1951 (Nevel's only appearance of the 1951 season) in a 3-1 victory over Boston.  In 1950, Nevel also appeared in a middle relief role on Sept. 26th, relieving Joe Ostrowski, but did not finish the game and did not figure in the decision.  Those were Nevel's only appearances for the Yankees in a Yankee victory.
