Notes

Fred from North Bellmore, NY writes: You are right about Jack Reed being called "Mantle's Legs" but there was another player, Tom Shopay, that was the first Yankee Player to be called "Mantle's Legs". He had a short run with the Yankees, [8 games in '67 and 28 games in '69 before he became a rule 5 pick-up by Baltimore.] He actually was with Baltimore in the [World Series in 1971.] Shopay was given that nickname but Jack Reed had a longer stint with the Yankees and Tom Shopay has been forgotten. I actually had a chance to meet Mantle at his restaurant in NYC and he had forgot Tom Shopay but he remembered when I mentioned his name. He then actually told me the story of that game you mentioned where Reed hit the homer as Stengel took him out of the game when they had a big lead and Mantle hit one or two homers in that game earlier. Casey, he told me, was mad at him as he was "hung over" from the night before and made him play that day.
