I'm often asked either why Joe McCarthy does not have a uniform number listed or why his number has not been retired. The answer is simple: Joe McCarthy did not wear a uniform number. I haven't been able to find any documented explanation during his Yankee years, however, in the book "Red Sox by the Numbers: A Complete Team History of the Boston Red Sox" by Bill Nowlin and Matthew Silverman, it's noted that when Joe managed the Red Sox from 1948-50, he "chose to wear a uniform with no number during his reign." So, it's very likely he made the same choice when managing the Yankees.
