Facts, Trivia, Memories and More about Danny Cater

Highlights

Cater's wife hailed from Williamsport, PA, the home of the Little League World Series. In 1970, a group from Williamsport approached the Yankees with the idea of honoring Cater with a "Danny Cater Day." Seeing as how the Yankees had difficulty filling the stands in the late 60's and early 70's and the group would be purchasing close to 600 tickets, the Yankees were glad to oblige. So, in 1970 there was actually a "Danny Cater Day" where Cater was honored with a pregame ceremony complete with gifts and a tearful Danny Cater.

Statistics

  • Cater hit a career best (for a full season).301 in 1970 and tied his career best mark with 76 RBI. He hit .313 in 1973, but with only 195 at-bats. He also had his best year in the on-base percentage category with a .340 mark.
  • Danny's .301 mark was good for 10th in the AL. He also finished 9th in the league with 175 hits. On the downside, the never fleet-of-foot Cater finished 6th in the league by grounding into 19 double plays. One of six seasons he'd finish in the top nine in the league in that department in a twelve year career.
