Facts, Trivia, Memories and More about Billy Martin

Notes

  • Billy missed the 1954 season due to military obligations, but was assigned #1.

Transactions

Traded: On June 15, 1957, following the infamous fight at the Copacabana,Billy was traded by the New York Yankees with Ralph Terry, Woodie Held and Bob Martyn to the Kansas City Athletics for Ryne Duren, Jim Pisoni and Harry Simpson. On May 16th, a group of Yankees gathered at New York nightclub, the Copacabana to celebrate Martin's 29th birthday. During the evening, a fight broke out which resulted in another patron getting "decked" by, it turned out, Hank Bauer. Yankee GM George Weiss, not a fan of Martin, blamed Martin and, despite protests from manager Casey Stengel and knowing Bobby Richardson was ready to step right in at second base, traded Martin one month later.
