Acquired: December 11, 1959: Joe was traded to the Yankees with Roger Maris and Kent Hadley. In return, the Yankees sent Don Larsen, Hank Bauer, Norm Siebern and Marv Throneberry to Kansas City.

Highlights

July 2, 1960: Joe caps a three-run ninth inning comeback victory against the Detroit Tigers with a game-winning single off Tom Morgan.  The Yankees entered the ninth trailing 6-4.  After two groundouts to start the inning, Bill Skowron brought the Yanks to within one after a solo home run.  Gil McDougald followed with a triple and Bobby Richardson tied the game with an RBI single.  Art Ditmar followed with a ground rule double putting runners on second and third and setting up DeMaestri's game winner.

September 5, 1960: Joe singles off Boston's Mike Fornieles, plating Johnny Blanchard with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth in a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.  The Yanks trailed 2-1 in the 8th when Tony Kubek tied it with a solo home run off Ike Delock.  After two quick outs in the bottom of the 9th, Blanchard reached when he was hit by a pitch, then advanced to third on a Gil McDougald single.  DeMaestri followed with the game winner.
